When most people say "font," what they are really referring to is typeface. A typeface is the letters, numbers, and symbols that make up a design of type. Elements within a typeface such as italic, bold, or condensed are what determines the font.
There are four essential characteristics of typeface...
Serif
Sans-serif
Proportional
Non-proportional (monospaced)
Serif: A small decorative line added as embellishment to the basic form of a character. The most common serif typeface is Times New Roman.
Sans Serif: A category of typefaces that do not use serifs (small lines at the ends of characters). A common sans serif typeface is Helvetica.
Proportional: A typeface in which different characters have different widths. Arial and Times New Roman are a couple of examples of a proportional font.
Non-proportional: These typefaces use the same amount of horizontal space for any letter. Courier and Courier New are non-proportional fonts.
Typefaces can be further altered by making them bold, italic or oblique. Italic and oblique are similar but different... Oblique is a slanted version of the standard text. Italic is a slanted version that also has certain characters drawn differently to create a more calligraphic version.
File Formats - There are about 250 different text file extensions in existence. However, most of them are variations upon the most common and widely used: .txt (Text), .docx (Microsoft Word Document), and .rtf (Real Text File). .docx and .txt are the most common used as editable original files. The most commonly shared format on the web is the .pdf (Portable Document Format).
This brochure/newsletter was created during TI:ME 1B in the summer of 2017 to promote the Foreign Language Academy at Maximo Elementary, of which I was the sole instructor.
During TI:ME 2B in the summer of 2019, I created this pre-test for new third graders in order to become acquainted with their musical interests and assess their retention from the previous year. Through this assignment, I learned how to download and install new display, body, and music fonts (TypeMyMusic) in order to combine text with music.
